Opportunity

Hocking Valley Community Hospital wanted to address its aging infrastructure and improve performance, while pursuing energy reduction measures for its facility. Brewer-Garrett was engaged to provide an energy analysis and implement energy efficient facility solutions based on the findings of the comprehensive analysis.

Solution

Brewer-Garrett implemented comprehensive infrastructure improvements including major mechanical system replacements, interior and exterior lighting, and control system upgrades, all of which benefited patients, staff, and visitors.

Boilers and Chillers

• Installed a 400-ton variable speed centrifugal chiller and two quick response 100 HP steam boilers, and kept existing systems in place, which not only positioned the Hospital for utility savings but provided valuable redundancy

• Further enhanced the chiller system with new pumps, a new tower level control and refrigerant monitoring system

• Implemented safety device automation and remote alarming capabilities at the boiler plant to provide staff with data for more efficient operation

Air Handing Units

• Installed new air handling equipment that helped the Hospital gain energy efficiencies while also improving the air quality and comfort levels in a highly sensitive environment

Lighting and Controls

• Replaced interior fluorescent lights with LED lamps that require 50% less energy

• Installed occupancy controls to reduce run hours in meeting rooms, office spaces and hallways, storage and restrooms

• Replaced HID fixtures in parking lots and exterior spaces with LED fixtures, with the promise of a longer lifespan and higher lighting quality

Results

The Hospital’s core infrastructure functions as a cohesive, efficient system, providing a more comfortable and reliable environment for patients, visitors, and staff
