Opportunity
The American Red Cross of Greater Cleveland was having cooling issues in their laboratory areas, which operate 24/7. ARCGC was utilizing multiple portable air-conditioning cooling units, as the existing rooftop units were original to the building built in 1991 and had outlived their useful life.
Solution
Brewer-Garrett completed a full commercial HVAC upgrade for ARCGC’s laboratory in July 2019, two months ahead of schedule. We installed four new rooftop units; retro-commissioned roughly 150 VAV boxes; installed and programmed a new Tridium controls system, which granted ARCGC the ability to control and monitor temperatures remotely; and tied in six new VAV boxes to the controls system.
Due to FDA regulations related to blood storage, heating and cooling could not be interrupted during construction–adding an extra layer of complexity to the process.
Results
BG was able to provide essential and reliable cooling and heating systems that are vital to Red Cross operations, especially laboratory areas. These upgrades directly affect ARCGC, but that impact also reaches to local hospitals counting on shipments of safe and uncompromised blood units.
